The California utilities company PG&E is drawing out plans to utilize solar energy from space to generate electricity as quickly as 2016. 10s of thousands of houses will benefit from the purchase of 200 megawatts of power from Solaren for a duration of 15 years. The California government has been approached by PG&E for approval of the project. The technology would work through the collection of the sun’s rays by satellites, which get converted to radio frequency and transmitted to a receiving hub on earth.
Worries about cloudy days are averted with this type technology. Last year, an experiment conducted by NASA was able to show the possibility of solar power. In this case, snienety two miles is hw long the energy was transferred, which is a smaller distance than the current intended project, but it’s a start. There is no reason to believe that the small scale of the experiment cannot be expanded to more wide spread network. Additional information regarding the project is expected in a few months.
